World War 2 : Chir River

Chir River

The Battle of Chir River took place in December 1942 on the Eastern Front of WW2, as part of the Soviet counteroffensive following the German defeat at Stalingrad. Fought between the German 48th Panzer Corps and Soviet forces from the 5th Tank Army, the battle occurred along the Chir River, a key defensive position for the Germans. The Soviets launched multiple offensives to break through German lines and encircle remaining Axis forces west of Stalingrad. Despite being outnumbered, the German forces, under General Balck, managed to delay Soviet advances through effective defensive tactics and counterattacks. However, the overall Soviet push in the region ultimately contributed to the collapse of German positions around Stalingrad.
