The Battle of Long Tan was a military engagement that took place on August 18, 1966, during the Vietnam War. The battle occurred in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan, in Phuoc Tuy Province, South Vietnam. A company of Australian infantry, Delta Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (6 RAR), was on patrol in the area when they encountered a large force of North Vietnamese Army (NVA) and Viet Cong (VC) soldiers. The Australian company, numbering around 100 men, became embroiled in a intense and prolonged firefight with the enemy force, which was estimated to be between 1,500 to 2,500 strong. The battle lasted for several hours, with the Australians calling in artillery and air support to help repel the enemy attacks. The engagement resulted in significant casualties on both sides, and is considered one of the most notable battles involving Australian forces during the Vietnam War.
